As a rule of thumb, each person at a dining table needs 60 cm of width. That's the minimum for eating comfortably without bumping elbows with your neighbor. From 70 cm you sit relaxed, from 80 cm generously. A place setting needs about 40 cm of depth, so a table with seats on both sides should be at least 80 cm deep. At 90 to 100 cm there's room in the middle for bowls and platters.

With MONARCH I allow a lot more space. The table for four is 220 cm long, a length that would usually seat six. Two people share each long side, and each has around 90–95 cm to themselves. That's enough to lean back, spread out and stay out of each other's way on a long evening.

And because the legs leave the ends clear, one more person fits comfortably at each end.

You choose between 73 and 76 cm. Your chairs decide: there should be around 28 to 30 cm between the seat and the tabletop. For most chairs that means 74 or 75 cm.

A damp cloth is enough for everyday use. MONARCH is finished with a hard-wax oil that makes the surface water-repellent, so a glass that leaves a wet ring won't soak straight into the wood. Still, as with any wooden table, it's best to wipe up standing water soon.
